The Next Generation of Leaders is growing The University of British Columbia (UBC) and The Mastercard Foundation are pleased to join together in announcing a unique and innovative scholarship program that will offer comprehensive support to young African leaders.

University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program

 Having already supported 171 Mastercard Foundation Scholars in its first phase, The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC will welcome 351 academically talented yet economically disadvantaged young people from Sub-Saharan Africa to use their education as a springboard for giving back to their home communities through creating access to even further education and catalysing positive change. 

Once completed, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars will return to their African communities and use the knowledge and skills they have learned for further economic expansion and social change.

University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Scholarship Description

Host university: University of British Columbia.

Host country: Canada.

Study level: Postgraduate/ Masters Scholarships.

Scholarship type: Fully funded.

Eligible Countries: African countries.

Programs available: Master of Sustainable Forest Management, Master of International Forestry, Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management, Master of Food and Resource Economics, Master of Food Science, Master of Land and Water Systems, Master of Data Science.

Eligibility Criteria

 To be considered for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Masters’ Degree Program at the University Of British Columbia, you must:

●      have a Bachelor’s degree;

●       not already hold a graduate or PhD degree;

●      be 35 years of age or under at the time of application (i.e. born on or after 1988);

●      be from a Sub-Saharan African country or be a refugee with proof of origin in a Sub-Saharan African nation

●      have spent a major part of their lives remaining in the geographical area of Sub-Saharan Africa,

●      currently financially underprivileged

●      have maintained good grades in complex circumstances

●      be a natural leader or demonstrate leadership potential

●      show an interest in and intention to give back to your home country.

●      need a Canadian study permit to study in Canada;

●      not claim or will be claiming asylum or refugee status in Canada;

●      commit to returning back to work with their training and skills in Africa.

furthermore,

●      This award is not open to Canadian citizens or Permanent Residents.

●      Students cannot apply funding accrued through the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at UBC towards programs in other institutions.

Selection criteria

Applicants seeking a Master’s degree from the University of British Columbia’s Vancouver campus in one of the faculties and programs listed below;

  1. Faculty of Forestry

●      MSc in Sustainable Forest Management (MSFM) from the University of British Columbia.

●      Master of International Forestry (MIF)

●      Master of Geomatics for Environmental Management

  1. The Faculty of Land and Food Systems

●      Master of Food and Resource Economics

●      Master of Food Science (MFS)

●      Master of Land and Water Systems

  1. Faculty of Science

●      Master of Data Science

All the costs of admitted scholars shall be covered by the Mastercard Foundation Scholarship Program.

Application Process

University of British Columbia Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Scholarship Description

To understand how to apply for the MasterCard Foundation Scholarship at the University of British Columbia, read the detailed instructions below

  1. Select your Program(s) of Interest from the list

●      Please visit the program website for confirmation that you have the right background experience.

  1. Take an English Proficiency Exam (TOEFL or IELTS) to prove your level of English for some applications, and send results to UBC [This may be different if you did your American Bachelor’s degree in the United States].

3. Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Package

●      A faster and lower cost is the electronic submission of all applications as a single PDF document. The most important dates to note are that late or incomplete packages will not be accepted, and UBC takes no responsibility for packages stuck in the mail/post, lost by your courier of choice etc.

4. For you to be eligible for this scholarship, the Selection Committee needs to ascertain that you are from an underprivileged background with intentions of making a return once your education is done and how your education will help in turning around things in your African community/ region or country.

5. UBC Faculty Applications Shortlist

●      Complete the Mastercard Foundation Application Apply Online: After you submit your Mastercard Foundation Application and you are approved, an email will be sent to eligible applicants informing them of how to complete an online UBC application.

6. Faculties Instructions Review

●      Although if your correspondence address and citizenship falls in one of the 50 least developed countries on The United Nations list, you may qualify for a fee waiver.

●      If your country is not among those listed countries, please request a fee waiver when you are submitting your application package for the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program. When you are asked to Proceed to the Faculty Application Step

7. Reviewing Process

●      The Mastercard Foundation Scholarship faculties will nominate candidates for admission in February 2025. The selection of award recipients will be made by a university-wide scholarship application review committee that ranks applications from the three faculties. Candidates will be contacted at this time to submit a video interview.

●      Only the Mastercard Foundation Scholar award recipients will be contacted and announced in April 2025.

Relevant Documents

●      Fill in the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program Application Form.

●      Submit a CV/resume.

●      Two letters of reference on letterhead

●      Transcripts.

●      Briefly discuss one current awareness-related community activity in which you have been involved or describe one specific example of your experience connected to being involved with a grassroots organisation or political campaign, and explain how it has impacted your knowledge.

●      Why have you applied to study in your chosen program at UBC, and how do you envision your chosen program helping you to meet your long-term career and personal learning goals? Why you should continue to pursue your goals?

NOTE: Appropriate responses would be a paragraph of 200-300 words for each of the following personal statements
