Eligibility Requirements 

To apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship, applicants must:

  • be a non-European Union citizen
  •  enroll as a full-time Master’s student of the University of Amsterdam 
  • meet the selection criteria of the chosen study program 
  • comply with the regulations of the Dutch Immigration Service (IND), to obtain a Dutch student visa
  • complete all submissions and enrollment processes 

Selection Requirements 

Applicants with an outstanding academic performance will be considered during the selection process. The following will also be reviewed;

  • Minimum GPA of 4.0 or First Class Honors 
  • A standard letter of motivation (not more than 500 words), the context of this letter should include reasons for choosing your preferred study program and the significance of obtaining the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship. 
  • Letters of recommendation (2) to prove yourself in terms of academic research.  

NB: These letters can be from your dean, academic supervisor, thesis supervisor and/or professor. 

  • Curriculum vitae 
  • The general presentation and quality of your application 

If application is incomplete, candidates will not be considered for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship. 

How to Apply for the Amsterdam Merit Scholarship 2025

  • Applicants should check the eligibility requirements for their desired study program 
  • Applicants should submit applications to the Admissions Offices of the Graduate School or the Faculties 
  • Follow the guidelines received from their various Faculties or Graduate schools

Amsterdam Merit Scholarship awardees are expected to have at least 80% of credits to continue enjoying the scholarship. The rules and regulations for satisfactory study progress vary with the Faculties or Graduate schools.
